It was nice knowing you Windows 7
Yep, Windows 7 will be joining XP and Vista in that great OS graveyard in the sky. NB: To be clear, I am talking about heaven, not "the cloud". Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 with security updates on January 14, 2020. That isn't as dramatic as it may appear. It just means that Microsoft will stop plugging holes with security. They've decided that the effort compared to the benefit is no longer viable...for them. For us it is a different story. Lots of people are sti

Stay Smart Online Alert - SMS Medicare Phishing scam
Follow the link to find out more information. As with most of these scams the nature of them is not new. Often just a few detail change and they go around again, kinda like chain mail. I have just received this alert (again) but the SMO web site dates it back to July. This means there's increased activity with this scam right now. So being prepared is the best defense. Sign up for the alerts and learn what you need to keep an eye out for. David #alerts #security #phishing #st

Playing hide and seek with your data
I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you the risks of losing your laptop or having your home computer stolen. You know there’s stuff on there that is of value to those who may choose to pry. Of course, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, we all have documentation and data that is best not seen by others. Medical records, heartfelt correspondence, financial records... and it goes on. In a previous article I spoke about the need to erase this data before your device or computer g

Reasons to change your password
In previous articles I have described ways to protect yourself and your data. Usually protecting yourself means applying a password to something. Particularly in the online world passwords are required for everything and it is easy to get lazy from “login” fatigue. For quite a while now all my logins, passwords, accounts and other bits and pieces requiring protection have been living in a password management tool. At present I have nearly 1000 items that require some sort of

Secure email - the myth, the pain, what you can do...
Every now and then I get asked about setting up a secure email system for a customer. Pretty much every time I have explained the ramifications to a customer, and they've pressed on anyway, they've invariably given up and gone back to regular email or sending private stuff by good old snail-mail. Without going into technical details, sending secure emails requires that all parties involved are playing the same game. By that I mean, they will need to understand what the secure

Traveling with tech', it just ain't worth the risk
Since I last traveled overseas I'd decided that next time I wouldn't take my smart phone. I decided I'd by a cheap (very cheap) phone with a prepaid sim at my destination. This was prompted by some very annoying and suspicious payments my telco took from me while I was away despite the fact that their SIM wasn't even in my phone at the time. Even before that I'd decided not to bother traveling with a laptop any more. I'd seen how laptop bearers would be pulled aside and spend

So you've been PWNED...whatever that is...
I know what PWNED is but it isn't my thing/generation and the definition and use varies a bit. But, the web site "Have I been PWNED" is very useful. Let me explain. Yesterday I received a phone call from a customer in quite some distress about an email they'd received. This email contained various threats and, it seemed, actual proof having accessed what they said they'd accessed - they had a password. My customer advised me that what they sent him was in fact a real password
